Alternative and Augmentaive Communication
Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC)
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) encompasses various methods and tools used to support individuals with communication difficulties in expressing themselves effectively. These methods range from low-tech options like picture boards and communication books to high-tech devices such as speech-generating devices and tablet applications. AAC systems are tailored to the individual’s needs, preferences, and abilities, providing them with a means to convey messages, thoughts, and desires. AAC not only facilitates communication but also promotes independence, social interaction, and participation in daily activities. Implementation of AAC involves collaboration among speech-language pathologists, educators, caregivers, and the individual themselves to ensure the most appropriate and effective communication support is provided. With the guidance and expertise of speech therapy professionals, individuals can learn to utilize AAC systems to their fullest potential, empowering them to communicate with confidence and autonomy.
General Steps to Obtaining a Device
Assessment: Meet with a speech-language pathologist (SLP) to assess your child’s communication needs and determine the most suitable AAC device based on their abilities and preferences.
Trial: Work with the SLP and AAC specialist to trial different devices to find the one that best meets your child’s needs. This may involve borrowing devices or using trial versions of software.
Funding: Explore funding options for the AAC device, such as insurance coverage, Medicaid, grants, or assistance programs. Your SLP or AAC specialist can provide guidance on navigating the funding process.
Device Selection: Once funding is secured, work with the SLP to select the AAC device that best fits your child’s communication goals, considering factors like ease of use, portability, and available features.
Training: Receive training from the SLP or AAC specialist on how to use the AAC device effectively, including programming buttons, navigating software, and implementing communication strategies.
Implementation: Integrate the AAC device into your child’s daily routines and activities, providing ongoing support and encouragement as they learn to use it to communicate.
Follow-Up: Schedule regular follow-up appointments with the SLP or AAC specialist to monitor your child’s progress, make any necessary adjustments to the device or communication strategies, and address any concerns or questions that arise.
The price of our AAC evaluation covers assistance with steps 1 through 4, including assessment, device trials, funding exploration, and device selection. Subsequent steps, encompassing training, implementation, and follow-up, are addressed through regularly scheduled therapy sessions. These sessions provide ongoing support, training, and guidance to ensure effective use of the AAC device and continued progress in communication skills.
*Please note that while we provide assistance with exploring funding options for AAC devices, we do not guarantee any funding or coverage. Availability and eligibility for funding can vary based on individual circumstances, insurance policies, and local regulations. We are committed to supporting you throughout the process, but ultimate responsibility for securing funding remains with the individual or their caregiver.
